History: As his pre-canon history is sketchy, I've tossed in some generally accepted fanon and bits of headcanon to flesh it out a bit. More detailed canon info can be located at Wikipedia.

Once upon a time, the man called Glitch was a man named Ambrose. Ambrose was chief adviser to the Queen of the Outer Zone and had a reputation for being the smartest man in the land. While he dabbled in several areas he was primarily an inventor, and he designed many creations for the people of the O.Z. He was very close with the royal family, and the Queen thought of him as a friend rather than just a member of her staff.

Then it all went wrong. The queen's eldest daughter became possessed by the spirit of an ancient Witch, her younger daughter was sent to the Otherside (aka Kansas) for protection, and civil war broke out when the Witch began to seize power. The queen and Ambrose were eventually captured, and Ambrose was ordered to give up his plans for the Sun Seeder, a machine intended to slow the suns and expand the growing season to help the famine-ravaged land.

The Witch, however, wanted to use the machine to bring eternal darkness to the Outer Zone. Ambrose refused to help her, even after extensive torture, and so she had him headcased: removed part of his brain and sealed his head closed with a zipper - a procedure usually performed on criminals to make them docile prisoners of their own minds. With the brain matter containing the plans in her possession the Witch had no more need for Ambrose and so sent him out to fend for himself.

Soon he forgot his real name and began calling himself Glitch, as that is what he did - forget things, repeat himself - and it seemed fitting. For years he wandered the land, until one day he met a girl looking for home, a man who'd lost his heart, and another in need of courage. Together the four of them set out on a quest to defeat the Witch and return the queen to her throne, hopefully finding their own missing pieces along the way.


Personality:

Glitch is a man with no past who is constantly building his present and striving for a better future. He has been accused of being a wide-eyed optimist, and if he does tend to look for a silver lining to most situations it with good reason. He has seen true wickedness, and so has a preference for the bright side of things. He is prone to staring into space, wandering off, fidgeting, stating the obvious, and sometimes forgetting personal boundaries and tact. Well aware of his shortcomings Glitch has a self-deprecating sense of humor which can veer into sarcasm, and he loves the occasional bad pun.

It's not always sunshine and rainbows, however. Glitch gets snappish when he's frustrated, petulant and whiny when he doesn't get his way, and his mood can swing towards melancholy if he dwells on all he's lost. He also carries the burden of nearly ten years meandering a war-torn realm with the zipper on his head marking him as a criminal. Most of the memories from this time are buried, and if they emerge he tends to quickly forget what's put him out of sorts and rebounds as if he'd never felt sadness in his life. In this way his condition acts as a defense mechanism, one of the few good things to come of the headcasing.

His more minor resets or "glitches" can be annoying if one tries to hold a conversation with him. He can get stuck on a phrase and repeat it over and over until distracted via physical contact, or he can loop back on himself and start an entire discussion over again. If he is given a stable environment and a willing person or two to keep him on track, the glitches will be less frequent and he will improve dramatically. This does not mean he requires any sort of constant supervision as he managed to make it nearly ten years on his own and has developed a keen sense of self-preservation. Being underestimated will rile him.

Every now and then one of his glitches will briefly bring forth the old Ambrose parts of his personality and he will behave a bit like he did before being headcased. In these moments he is quieter, more lucid, with a touch more of the arrogance and general snobbery that comes with being a member of the nobility.

He loves logic, order, and structure but his mind is made out of chaos. Sorting through all of this takes up much of his mental energy, so he relies heavily on his instincts and intuition. He also relies on the people around him to give him context, and will take his cues from them.

By and large he is an extrovert. He wants to know people as much as he wants to know things, so if someone looks friendly he's more than likely to say hello. First impressions are key: if someone is friendly to him, he will respond positively. If someone is at all nasty, he will reciprocate, and if he can't quite figure a person out he will get flustered and unsure of himself.

With his whimsical, scattered nature it can be easy to forget that Glitch is a grown man with all the emotions and experiences that entails. He is also a gentleman to the marrow, and while he's forgotten most courtly etiquette he will still strive to be polite. His loyalty to the people he cares about is unwavering, and once you've become his friend he will stand by you through almost any hardship.

Strengths:
Physical - Glitch is a "fantastic dancer" with a knowledge (mainly as muscle memory) of most classical, courtly styles. His excellent sense of rhythm aids him in hand-to-hand (or rather his-foot-to-your-head) combat, and he is quite skilled at a fighting form that resembles taekwondo. He was able to easily knock out four trained soldiers, and when focused on his actions he possesses a good deal of speed and a agility, as well as some quick reflexes. He is fairly strong, as he was able to - on foot - transport an unconscious man a good distance through heavy snow. And yes, most of the way was uphill.

The zipper on his head is waterproof, and seems to have enhanced strength as a being hit over the head with a large wrench seemingly left Glitch more annoyed than hurt.

Mental - Despite only having half-a-brain Glitch is still quite intelligent. He can follow a line of logic, help with strategy, and given the right prompting can dredge up helpful information. Based on the inventions mentioned in canon, before he was headcased he knew a great deal about mechanics, physics, mathematics, chemistry, and astronomy. As the queen's adviser he also knew the ins and outs of politics, and appeared to help her with military planning during the war. He retains some of this knowledge, albeit in a greatly reduced capacity. He is also familiar with rudimentary psychology, occasionally offering (unsolicited) analysis to one of his traveling companions.

Brain Stuff - Over time his brain has developed many shortcuts to cope with the hemispherectomy, mainly to do with overlapping the memory and language function. Glitch will verbally repeat someone's name or important bit of information, thus reinforcing it by both hearing it again and utilizing his language centers to create another "map" to it.

Emotional - With his mind as scattered as it is, Glitch tends to be guided by his emotions and instincts. He's outgoing and generally social, and his optimism gives him a sunny disposition which helps him cope with unpleasant situations. Glitch doesn't hide his emotions, everything he feels is evident in both his demeanor and his facial expressions. He claims to be twice as brave now than he was before being headcase.

Weaknesses:
Physical - As he is pretty much a baseline human, Glitch is vulnerable to injury, disease, and death. Physically he doesn't have a lot of endurance, and was always the one to insist on stopping to rest during the group's journey. He once dislocated his right shoulder quite badly, and is developing arthritis there (headcanon based on a quick shot of him rolling and massaging it after a fall).He also has sinus flare-ups, likely related to a pollen or dust allergy. When he's not paying attention to what he's doing, he can also be clumsy to the point of tripping over obvious obstacles or even his own feet.

The zipper itself is a point of weakness if one gets the opportunity to manipulate it. It can be opened to allow one access to the inside of his head, and being made of metal it retains both heat and cold easily and can get uncomfortable, or downright painful. If Glitch is going to be out in the sun or extreme cold, he'll likely wear a hat.

Mental - Perhaps his greatest weakness is his faulty memory. A misfiring of his synapses (a "glitch" if you will) can result in simple things like losing someone's name or the track of a conversation, or a total reset when he can temporarily forget who he is, where he is, and what's going on around him. Needless to say he has a terrible sense of direction and has a great deal of trouble putting names and faces together. He's got a very short attention span and can be easily distracted by that shiny thing over there. Lastly, most of the information he does retain only applies to the Outer Zone (history, language, the periodic table), so once he's removed from his own world much of the trivia he'd hung onto so dearly becomes useless.

Brain Stuff - The mental shortcuts he's created are not exactly reliable. If there is a word or phrase he feels it is important to convey, he will get stuck on it and keep repeating it. It also causes a bit of a stammer as he searches for the correct word or concept, and he'll frequently change track mid-sentence if a new idea comes to him, whether it's a worthwhile idea or not.

Emotional - The problem with being guided by emotions is that sometimes they are misplaced, and there is a good deal of potential for Glitch to be manipulated by them. He tends to trust others more than himself (what does he know, after all, he's only got half-a-brain) and lacks self-confidence. Glitch's goofy, bubbly exterior surrounds a core of repressed trauma and depression, as well as anger at what was done to him, and while he's not really conscious of the negative undercurrent it can still affect his behavior.

Misc. -He is afraid of heights and fire, and "freaked out" by scarecrows. He's also not too quick to trust doctors or other medical types, as the memory of being headcased tends to feature in his half-recalled nightmares.

Q & A
1. How do you think you perform in a crisis?

I think I do about as "okay" as a guy with half-a-brain can, y'know? I mean I certainly do my best to not make things worse or or be unhelpful. It kinda depends on the crisis too. I can do people-rescuing and m-maybe whipping up a doohickey that'll...do stuff, but if you wanna arrange a dinner party at the last minute o-or if somebody suddenly goes into labor then I don't think I'll be much use.

2. What is most important to you?

Oh, that one's easy. All I've wanted for...well, as long as I can remember all I've wanted was to find my brain and get it back in my noggin. Once that's done I'll be smart again, a-a-and I'll remember everything and then things'll be better, I'm sure of it.

3. What is more important: love or loyalty?

Loyalty, even though love's really important too. I think when you love someone - o-or something - it's your loyalty to them that shows how much you care. It's what makes love special.

4. Do you have any regrets? If so, what are they?

A few, definitely, but now that I remember I did it I I I wish I'd never come up with the Sun Seeder. Not just for what happened to me over it, but...i-it ended up hurting so many people. Even if it was the Sorceress who did all that it was still my idea, so I don't think-- I can't forgive myself for it.

5. Are you a brave person? Do you face your fears or run away from them?

I'm braver than I used to be, that's for sure! I mean, yeah, it's probably because I don't think to be afraid anymore, but that still counts, right? A-and I'll probably still run the other way if there's a flock of monkey bats after me, but I can be brave for my friends.

Third Person:

The book served as a much-needed distraction from the ache in his back. Glitch sat cross-legged on the ground, his tattered coat draped around his shoulders like the world's most worn-out security blanket. Every now and again one wing or the other would twitch restlessly against the confinement.

"Shh!" he cast over his shoulder, then went back to flipping through impossible pages. It had to be magic, and he was impressed by the ingenuity that seamlessly integrated it with the technological aspects. A book you could talk with! Oh, if only he'd created something so magnificent.

Had he? No, not likely, if he'd designed it there'd be little holography thingies and...and a bell. A bell'd make it more fun.

He closed the marvelous talky-book and got to his feet to study his surroundings. Nothing was familiar, not the buildings or the people, and he sighed in frustration. As accustomed as he was to being lost he'd spent the last week getting used to DG's confident smile, Cain's solid, dependable silhouette, the soothing balm of Raw's presence, and Toto trotting along at his feet (or Tutor giving him those pained, sorrowful glances).

Glitch had begun to find his way again, he just knew it, finally tracked down his brain and everything and now here he was, more lost and confused than ever. What if he were stuck here forever, what if he never saw his friends again, what if he never got reunited with his brain again, what if--

"Oh, stop it," he snapped to himself and shook his head. "I I managed to get everything to work out once, who says I can't do it again. I just...need to..."

With a single firm nod to himself Glitch pointed due-left and promptly set off in that direction. In a delayed reaction his left wing also gestured, unsettling his coat from that shoulder and causing much in the way of flailing to keep the tails from dragging on the ground. He spun a few times on the spot, glaring back at the offending appendage before he got the coat re-situated.

"As I was saying, I I just need to pick a direction and get going."

That established, he set off in the precise opposite direction from which he'd started.
